History

The neighborhood was once part of a 3,000-acre farm owned by former North Carolina Governor Cameron Morrison. Businessman Johnny Harris and his former partner, Smoky Bissell, were instrumental in developing the farm into what is now SouthPark, and they continue to announce and build office space, adding millions of existing office square footage. SouthPark was named after the SouthPark Mall, which opened in 1970 to 92,000 visitors on its first day. The area has since rapidly evolved as an employment hub, largely due to the prominent mall and thriving business economy.
